Increasing your effectiveness with EFT, part 178.
Many people are used to having their “negative” thoughts or emotions dismissed or reframed by others. They share how they really feel, and the other person gets upset, tries to tell them to think positively, or quickly reminds them to be grateful. This is often done with good intentions, but it does not create a space where emotions can be expressed safely.
For some, this experience began in childhood, when parents could not hold space for big emotions. For others, it still happens now, with friends, partners, or even practitioners who become uncomfortable when emotions are expressed. I have spoken to many people who were told by a therapist, coach, or practitioner to calm down or “look at the bright side” the moment they cried.
My Approach
I want to reassure you that I will not get upset by your emotions. In our sessions, you can feel and express them fully. You can cry, raise your voice, or simply let the feelings be there. I will listen, and I will encourage you to tap while giving voice to what is really there for you.
If you prefer to stay quiet instead of putting things into words, that is okay too. And if talking about something feels overwhelming, or you simply prefer to keep it private, we can use code words or even tap silently. The goal is not to force expression, but to create a safe container where every part of you is welcome.
About Crying in Sessions
It is very common to feel uncomfortable about being seen crying, even in a supportive space. Crying can feel deeply vulnerable. Because of this, I let my clients know that they are welcome to turn off their camera if they want to. Sometimes that small option can make it easier to let the tears flow.
Meeting You Where You Are
The priority is to meet you exactly where you are. You do not have to express every emotion openly if that does not feel right. But if you do want to, you can. The point is that the space is yours, and all of your emotions are valid.
EFT works best when we stop trying to push feelings away and instead meet them with presence, curiosity, and compassion. That is the environment I strive to create in every session.
